Caleb’s birthday fell on a weekday so of course that meant he had to have two birthday cakes. His actually birthday cake was just a small 8″ round, two layered Funfetti cake. Olaf was made of fondant and the pine tree was an upside down sugar cone with homemade buttercream frosting piped on. There are lots of great tutorials on youtube on how to make them!

Caleb’s birthday party cake was more elaborate! I made a half sheet chocolate cake and 6″ round chocolate to sit on top (for the snow mountain). You can’t have a “Frozen” birthday without ice castle! I used pop rocks on sticks for the ice castle (found on Amazon). That was easy… The mountains behind the castle and down the side of the snow mountain, not so easy! I’m new to working with fondant. I’ve used it on all my boys’ birthday cakes but that’s only twice a year, so I’m far from a pro! I did know that there was no way fondant was going to hold up at the size I needed it to be. After lots of trial and error, I finally found something that would work and you’ll never guess what it was… As a very frustrated me looked around the house, I saw a pool noodle outside on the deck. “Perfect!” I thought. I ran to the dollar store to grab some pool noodles, brought them home and then started cutting them into the shapes I needed to mimic the mountains. Rather than try to cover that in fondant, I dyed my frosting black and just frosted the noodles. I held all the noodles together with toothpicks and the whole thing stayed together over night and made it through the party. Success!!

The snow monster was all made of pool noodles. Again, I cut them up and used toothpick to hold them together in the shape I needed them to be. For the snow monster, I covered the pool noodles in fondant. I crushed up some pop rocks and used them as his icy spikes and claws. That cake was A LOT of work but the look on my son’s face when he saw it was priceless!
