St. Patricks Day Crafts For Kids

With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, I pulled together some our favorite St. Patricks Day Crafts for kids to give you some ideas of things to make with your little ones!

Pot of Gold

To make these adorable pots of gold, paint stripes onto your child’s hand – purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red. Have them stamp their hand onto a sheet of white paper. Next, have them glue gold coins at the bottom of their hand. Lastly, add a black pot. My boys really enjoyed making these. They loved painting their hands all the colors of the rainbow!

Shamrock Sun Catchers

We made tissue paper sun catchers for Christmas and loved them so much that we’ve been making them every holiday since! To make tissue paper sun catchers, cut a frame of your desired shape out of card stock (we made shamrocks). Lay the shape onto a self-adhesive laminate sheet. Have your child place colored pieces of tissue paper on the sheet. We used dark green, light green, and white. When your child is finished, seal in the tissue paper with a second laminate sheet. Punch a hole at the top and add a piece of yarn to hang your sun catcher in the window.

Rainbows

Using colored sharpies, I drew a rainbow onto sheets of white paper. I then had my boys trace the lines with the matching colored paint. I love the way these rainbows came out! Too cute!

Shamrocks

My boys absolutely love Do-A-Dot Art markers and want to use them every chance they get. To make these fun shamrocks, I simply drew shamrock shapes onto a sheet of white paper and had my boys stamp the inside of them with green Do-A-Dot Markers.

Leprechauns

These hand print leprechauns are absolutely adorable! To make them, paint your child’s hand orange, and their palm peach. Have them stamp their hand onto a sheet of white paper. Next, have your child glue on a green hat with buckle, and wiggly eyes. Finally, have your child draw on a nose and smile.

Hand Print Shamrocks

This is a super easy craft but it’s just so cute! Simply paint your child’s hand green and stamp three times onto a sheet of white paper. Next, paint on a green stem and your done.

If you decide to make any of these fun St. Patricks Day Crafts with your little one, please share your pics with me on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Essential Baby Shower Gifts & DIY Diaper Babies

This past weekend, I attended a baby shower for my soon-to-be new baby cousin. That was the second baby shower this month. I can’t even count how many baby showers I have been to this past year… I do love baby showers and all the excitement a new baby brings but buying the same baby shower gifts over and over again gets a bit boring. For this baby shower, I decided to skip the baby registry and come up with my own baby shower gifts.

I headed to the baby section of Target and started grabbing the must have essentials that every new mom seems to forget to add to their baby registry or simply doesn’t know about. Here is what my shopping list looked like:

Baby Shower Gifts

  • Caldesene Powder – This powder was introduced to me by my mother when my first son was born. He had such sensitive skin and this powder helped many of his issues, including heat rash!
  • Boudreaux’s Maximum Strength Butt Paste – Prior to having my boys, I used to be a nanny. One of the families I worked for used Butt Paste on their twin babies. By far the best diaper rash cream I have ever come across!
  • Baby nail clippers – I was sure someone else had already gotten nail clippers but these things are easily misplaced and I always had three or four pairs around the house! I personally like the Safety First brand.
  • Baby Q-Tips – Q-tips are something that you never think about until you need one. I bought baby Q-Tips that came in an adorable little box that could be refilled as needed.
  • Pedialyte Powder Packs – Pedialyte is another item that you never think about until you need it. If you do need Pedialyte, it’s because your little one is sick and who wants to run to the store with a sick baby?
  • Infant Motrin – Again, who wants to run to the store with a sick baby?

Aside from these essential baby shower gifts, I also bought the baby some onesies, a fleece sleep sack, socks, washcloths, baby wipes, diapers, and the perfect box to put everything in. Of course, presentation is pretty important so I decided to make some diaper babies to go along with all my baby shower gifts.

DIY Diaper Babies

I’ve made diaper cakes in the past but this was my first time making diaper babies. These adorable little babies were so easy to put together. All you need is diapers (I used size 1), rubber bands, baby washcloths, and baby socks. First, simply roll a diaper up and place a rubber band around it.

Cover one end of the diaper with a baby sock. This will be your diaper baby’s hat. Next, swaddle your diaper baby in a washcloth, just as you would a receiving blanket. You can add a pin to hold the washcloth in place, if need be, but I had no problem tucking the washcloth behind my baby.

Finally, draw on little eyes with a permanent marker. I drew some of babies with closed eyes and some with opened eyes. I placed as many diapers as I could into the bottom of the box. On top of the diapers, I added the onesies and sleep sack. I then placed all of the other baby shower gifts on top of the clothes, and lined the diaper babies along the front of the box. Whatever I couldn’t fit into the box was placed into a gift bag, along with the card. Everyone absolutely loved these diaper babies and I’m sure I will definitely be making them again!

Do You Have a Plan of A-Snack? Try These 8 On-The-Go Autumn Snack Ideas – Pick-Ease

What could possibly grind your gears more than chaperoning picky eaters while running errands on a tight schedule?

If you’re a busy parent, a babysitter, or a family member that periodically chips in when called upon, then you’ve experienced this recipe for disaster firsthand.

That’s why we’re here to make a stand against the tyranny of the on-the-go picky eater by providing you with a pantry’s worth of edible ammunition.

Here are 8 snack-strategies that will prove irresistible even to the most particular of palates.

Bon Appetite!

1. Find the Secret Sauce
This is more of a rule of thumb than a recipe, but it’s essential nonetheless. Even the most difficult eaters fancy at least one sauce, all you need to do is find out what that sauce is and have some on hand at all times.

And, if they dig the sauce, they’ll most likely dig into (with a pick-ease perhaps?) whatever’s drenched in the sauce. Assorted vegetables like carrots, cherry tomatoes, and broccoli florets are perfect sauce scoopers that will have your picky eater feasting in no time at all. But most importantly, this strategy is ideal for when you’re on the move and need to provide nutritious sustenance to your picky eater(s).

2. Peanut Butter and… Celery?

This winning combination provides your little loved ones with fiber, protein, and enough calories (a medium-sized stalk with 1-3 scoops of smooth peanut butter) to keep tummies full until meal time.

If you pride yourself on staying prepared in times of potential snack-time crisis, keep a designated jar of peanut butter in your vehicle. Pack separate snack baggies or small to medium sized tupperware containers with celery in your fridge so you can grab one when you’re in a hurry. Celery and peanut butter is staple of healthy snack-foods for good reason. It’s convenient, fits into a plethora of scenarios, and is affordable.

And if you need/want a healthy substitute for peanut butter, hummus is your best bet. It comes in a multitude of flavors and contains much less sugar and fat.

3. Fruit Chips – The Best of Both Worlds

Kids become savvy when it comes to swapping healthy snacks for ones that are salt-laden and fat-infused. The fact of the matter is that picky eaters will opt-in for the snack that tastes the best, which oftentimes happens to be one that’s detrimental to their health. The best way to circumvent this issue is to create healthy snacks that taste just as good as their evil-twins.

A prime example of this healthy switcheroo is apple chips. Their as easy to make as they are to say. Simple extract the cores of a few apples, slice them thin, coat with them with cinnamon (or jell-o powder if you’re feeling creative) and bake them at 200 degrees for four to seven hours.

4. Trail Mix is the Snack of Champions

If you’re looking for a more wholesome and hearty snack, trail-mix is your best bet. Trail-mix works well in time-crunches and in busy lifestyles because it can be portioned out and kept fresh in the freezer. It also happens to be the most flexible snack option because you can bring your picky eater into the decision making process. Present them with 10 possible trail mix ingredients and let them chew on each one until they reach hard and fast decisions about what they like and dislike. Once you’ve discovered the golden ratio of ingredients, bulk-buy them and ration out trail-mix bags for the foreseeable future. (Bonus: If you have extra apple chips, throw some in your trail-mix for good measure!)

5. Gamify Snack TimeIf your picky eaters give you a hard-time about snack-time, it’s time you reframed it to look more appealing to them. You can easily transform snack-time into a game that both delights your kids while feeding them.

If your snack of the day happens to be fruit salad, turn it into a competition to see who can make the most beautiful fruit kabobs using toothpicks.

If you packed some delicious and nutritious trail-mix, ask your kiddos to think about their favorite animal and then pretend to be that animal it enjoys its midday meal.

The second you activate a child’s imagination and aim it at the task at hand, snack-time quickly morphs into an enjoyable activity for them to engage in rather than a chore to be carried out.

6. Give Your Snacks Custom Names

This strategy is similar to the gamification route we explored above. Change the perception of something in order to change the thing being perceived. While this strategy requires you to dip your snacks into a bowl of imagination, the results may just surprise you.

This strategy is already being used by snack-venders to entice big appetites. Pirates Booty, Gushers, and Animal Crackers immediately come to mind. The names add an extra element of story or intrigue to each snack, allowing the imaginations of consumers to color in the lines.

7. Roll-Ups > Sandwiches

If you’re stuck in the vicious cycle of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and don’t know how to stop the spiral, roll-ups will quickly become your favorite snack option. Roll-ups are easy to make, can be easily made into bite-sized morsels, and don’t require you to cut off the crust!

Simply select a type of tortilla, lay down your condiments of choice followed by some cheese, meat, veggies strips, etc, and voila, you’ve created a snacker’s dream!

8. Frozen Grapes – The Show Stopper

This is a recent, and monumental, discovery. It’s so plain, so obvious, and so incredibly effective. Store your grapes in your freezer and, once thoroughly frozen, spear a few of them onto kabob sticks and call them home-made grape popsicles!

Your kids will promptly forget that they’re merely munching on frozen grapes on a stick and be forever grateful that you allowed them to eat (drumroll please) dessert before dinner! You can extend this strategy to include all of the fruit-groups to create vibrant, techni-colored frozen-fruit kabobs.

Now that you’re armed with these strategies, nothing can stop you quelling the appetites and preferences of your picky eaters!

Do you have something else in mind? Maybe a strategy or recipe that’s been a staple in your personal repertoire? We want to hear from you! Please share your brilliance below.

Slater Memorial Park in Pawtucket, RI

Growing up, Slater Memorial Park in Pawtucket, RI was one of my favorite parks to go to. Now, years later, I thoroughly enjoy taking my own children there. Slater Memorial Park is so much more than just an awesome playground for kids. From visiting the farm animals, to searching for frogs, there’s just so much to do!

Adventure Playground

When you hear the word “Park”, you think slides and swings so I’ll start there. Years ago, the playground at Slater Memorial Park used to consist of wooden play equipment. Although it was lots of fun to play on, I can’t remember ever leaving without a splinter or skinned knee. Since then, they have upgraded to some pretty amazing equipment and named the play area “Adventure Playground”. Aside from two entrances, Adventure Playground is fully fenced in. On one end of the playground there is a huge jungle gym consisting of 7 slides, 2 bridges, and multiple ladders and climbers. On the left side is a large net made of rope. The kids love challenging themselves to see how high they can climb, and if they can make it across the rope ladder! There is also a second rope climber to the right (not pictured). On the other end of Adventure Playground there is a small toddler sized jungle gym. On this one, you’ll find three slides, a small bridge, and a few different ladders/climber. On the left side, there is also a small picnic table under the slide. My boys love playing “restaurant” under there and serving each other mulch. You’ll also find two sets of swings at Adventure Playground, along with an awesome rock wall. It’s pretty amazing to watch my boys get higher and higher on the rock wall each year!

Daggett Farm

To the left of Adventure Playground, you’ll find Daggett Farm. Daggett Farm is a cute little farm which houses donkeys, pigs, a couple horses, a cow, goats, turkeys, ducks, rabbits, and more. Although you’re not allowed to feed these animals, little ones love visiting each of them. My boys love the turkey the most. When you gobble at it, it almost always gobbles back!Daggett Farm is also a great spot for younger children to play. Many people have donated climbers, slides, seesaws, and ride-on toys, making this the perfect play area for toddlers. At the back of the farm is an entrance to a garden. This area can be rented out for birthday parties. If it’s not being rented out on the day of your visit, feel free to take a walk through. It’s very pretty! Also, be sure to bring a few coins with you to Daggett Farm. There a few water fountains and ponds that the kids like to toss coins in and make wishes!

Feeding the Ducks

Slater Memorial Park is definitely our go to place when we want to feed the ducks! The scenery is beautiful and there are always lots of ducks, geese, and swans there looking for food!

Catching Frogs

Across the street from the pond at Slater Memorial Park there is a path that not many people know about. The path leads to an area where we like to go to search for frogs. This area is absolutely beautiful. There are a couple wooden and stone bridges along the way. You’ll also see lots of lily pads. cattails, and dragonflies!

Looff Carousel

The Looff Carousel was built in 1895 and installed in Slater Memorial Park in 1910. In 1978, the carousel was restored. This is my boys’ favorite carousel. Others they have been on play music entirely way too loud, but not this one! I love that they only charge .50/ride! You can also purchase popcorn at the carousel, and they usually have an ice cream and lemonade cart right outside the carousel.

Food at Slater Memorial Park

Right outside of Daggett Farm, you’ll find a full concession stand where you can get burgers, hot dogs, chicken fingers, etc. There’s also an ice cream stand, and a clam shack! Ice cream is my weakness so we have to stop there every time we visit Slater Memorial Park!

On top of everything I’ve listed, you’ll also find baseball fields, tennis courts, bike trails, a dog park, lots of picnic areas, and swan boats at Slater Memorial Park! If you haven’t noticed, I’ve pulled all of these images from numerous different trips we’ve taken. There is just so much to do in this one place that it would be impossible to do them all in one day! If you haven’t been to this amazing park yet, I strongly recommend you give it a shot! You won’t be disappointed!

Witches Brew Sensory Play For Kids

Like most kids, my boys absolutely love Halloween, as well as sensory play. For some Halloween fun this year, I decided to bring the two together and make an awesome Witches Brew!

See Also: DIY Light Table – Sensory Play & 10 Light Table Activities – Sensory Play

Witches Brew Ingredients

A quick trip to Michael’s Arts and Crafts store was all it took to gather all the necessary ingredients to make this Witches Brew a success. Here’s what we used!

  • Black Witches Cauldron
  • Glow Sticks
  • Slimy Bugs
  • Plastic Snakes
  • Rubber Lizards
  • Eyeball Bouncy Balls
  • Plastic Skeleton Bones
  • Halloween Colored Pompoms
  • Dawn Dish Detergent

All of these items have different textures and smells, making them great for sensory play!

Making Your Witches Brew

The first step to making our Witches Brew was adding warm water to the black cauldron.

Next, we added a few glow sticks to make our potion a bit more magical.

My boys then took turns adding all of the various items to the cauldron and stirring their Witches Brew.

Once they finished adding everything to their cauldron, I added a little Dawn dish soap. I gave each of my boys a straw and let them blow bubbles in the water. This made our Witches Brew come to life!

When they were finally done blowing bubbles, we played a little game. Each of my boys took turns closing their eyes and reaching into the cauldron. I would then ask them to try to find a certain item without looking. It took awhile for them to get the hang of it but they finally figured out how to take their time and feel each of the items they picked up to find the one they needed, before pulling the first item they grabbed out of the water. They had so much fun with this!

Sensory Play is so important for little ones and it’s always the most fun. My boys thoroughly enjoyed this activity and I’m sure we will be repeating it well after Halloween. I hope your little ones have just as much fun with this as mine did! Please share your Witches Brew pics with me on Instagram and Facebook!

Wishing you all a Happy and Safe Halloween!

Reviews – Pick-Ease

“After two years of hard work, Desrochers officially launched Pick-Ease and a new website this summer. Pick-Ease is BPA-free and made entirely in the USA. The Pick-Ease mold, and the products themselves, were made at Rihani Plastics in Cranston. Barrington Printers, which is pretty much across the street, made the packaging and found a printer in California that could make the specialty decorative labels Desrochers needed. She ships them from her house.”

“I had been following Melissa from Pick-Ease on Instagram for several months before I approached her about this product. 5 Simple Fourth of July Crafts For Kids

From parades to fireworks, the Fourth of July is such a fun time of year! My boys and I also had lots of fun creating some awesome red, white, and blue crafts to hang around our house. I’ve pulled together a list of 5 Simple Fourth of July Crafts for Kids that you can make with your little ones!

1. Color by Numbers

After reading F is for Flag by Wendy Lewison, I had my boys color in this color by numbers flag that I created. I’ve also attached a black and white version for you to print out for your little one to color.

2. Patriotic Wind Sock

This was a fun craft to create. First I had my boys glue white stars onto a sheet of blue construction paper. Next, I rolled it into a tube and stapled it together. Finally I had boys glue red and white stripes onto the bottom of the tube. This was a good way to work on patterns too! Finally, we added a red handle so we could hang out wind socks in the doorways. 3. American Flag Hand Print

To make this American flag hand print, I painted red and white stripes onto my boys’ hands. I added a blue square onto the bottom corner of their palms. We stamped their hands onto a sheet of white paper. Once their hand prints dried, I cut them out and we added a black flag pole.

4. Fireworks

Using a plastic fork, we stamped paint onto a sheet of white construction paper in circle patterns to make fireworks. Such an easy craft but one my boys really enjoyed!

5. Bald Eagle

To make this adorable bald eagle, paint the bottom of your child’s foot half white and half blue. Paint their toes orange. Stamp their foot onto a sheet of construction paper. Next, paint your child’s hand blue and stamp that one a sheet of construction paper. Once the hand print and foot print dry, cut them out. Glue the hand onto the foot print to make the bald eagles wing. Add an orange beak and wiggly eye.

I hope you liked my Fourth of July Crafts for Kids! Wishing you and your family a very Happy Fourth of July!

Features – Pick-Ease

Pick-Ease is perfect for almost any type of food. Simply cut up your child’s meals into bite-sized pieces, serve, and pick-ease. For rounded foods, such as grapes or cherry tomatoes, be sure to place the flat side of the food on the plate to keep it from rolling around. Not only is Pick-Ease extremely easy and fun to use, it also helps keep your child’s fingers clean!

Head – The character sits on the head of the Pick-Ease. Most children hold their Pick-Ease by this piece.

Material – Pick-Ease is made of polypropylene, a BPA-free plastic. The plastic and the sticker are both easy-to-clean and, of course, dishwasher safe.

Handle – Younger children often use the handle to hold their Pick-Eases. It also acts as a stopping point for food.

End – The end is a rounded tip to pick up the food. It is pointy enough to pick up food, but not enough to hurt a child.

Depending on the child’s level of fine motor skills, the child could use the head to hold pick-ease using their pincer grasp.

Fruits: Strawberries, peaches, grapes, melon (watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew), bananas, kiwis, pineapples, pears, apples, blueberries, and pitted cherries.

Vegetables: Peppers, broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, baked potatoes, zucchini, and squash.

Meats: Chicken nuggets, hamburgers, meatballs, deli sandwich meats, hot dogs, sausages, and ham.

On top of the foods listed above, my boys love using Pick-Ease to eat pancakes, waffles, bagels with cream cheese, string cheese cut into cubes, turkey and cheese sandwiches, Nutella sandwiches, ravioli, and, of course, pizza! There is really no limit to the types of foods that can be used with Pick-Ease.

Your child will truly enjoy experimenting new foods with Pick-Ease, which makes it an amazing tool for even the pickiest of eaters!
