MARC ON CLARK featuring “Leaving On The 5th!”

09.01.10

“Filmmaker Jay Rodan captures on film the collaborative effort between Marc Jacobs, Larry Clark, and Tiffany Limos for the Dirty Durty Diary magazine editorial spread entitled “Marc on Clark” shot by Kayt Jones. Marc Jacobs clothing reinterprets Larry Clark’s cinematic offerings in this beautiful montage.” Using our song “Leaving On The 5th” makes an awesome video that much sweeter!

Kevin Bronson, over at Buzzbands.LA gave us a very sweet band write-up. Thanks man!! Check it out below. You can even download our latest song “Leaving on the 5th!”

Voxhaul Broadcast has pretty much taken Los Angeles by storm this year, juggling a passel of sweaty live shows with recording sessions to complete its debut album, “Timing Is Everything.” The songs made by the quartet of David Dennis, Anthony Aguiar, Phillip Munsey II and Kurt Allen walk an exhilarating tightrope between rock ’n’ soul and razor-edged indie rock, foot-stomping one moment and kaleidoscopic the next. The long-awaited album will finally be out Nov. 2 (look for a record-release show that week). You may have heard this first single on the radio — it’s gotten airplay on both sides of the Atlantic.

Voxhaul Broadcast Live On KCRW!!

Voxhaul Broadcast on KCRW, Live at the Hammer on Thursday

Voxhaul Broadcast are at a creative crossroads. The overlying theme of today’s Morning Becomes Eclectic debut is that they are a local band in the process of finding their identity – and making some pretty great music while they figure it out. Jason has been supporting them since earlier this year, spinning “Shoot the Breeze” and “Blackout Conversations,” among others. He points to the latter track as an example of the band’s growth from a straight ahead rock act to a more poppy, melodic sound.

Today, they proved they can do both well — splitting their sets between the two sounds. It was great to see a band that is so fluid and able to try new things, trusting their instincts no matter where they lead. The locals have released a series EPs and are in the process of properly recording their first full length, set for October release.

Check out their session and go see them live for FREE at the Hammer Museum this Thursday, the last show in the Also I Like to Rock series presented by KCRW. They are promising to make it one to remember.

Dickiessounds.com Q&A With Voxhaul Broadcast

07.15.10

Posted on July 14, 2010

Q: Touring is a big part of a musician’s job nowadays, any advice for artists getting into their first years of touring?
A: Definitely use your bands and personal social networks like myspace, twitter, and facebook to promote all your shows on the road. Also get to know your new fanbase in each new city after shows because if they like you enough they will probably be the first ones promoting your band next time you come to their town and sometimes they will let your band crash at their house which is a lot cheaper then paying for hotel rooms.

Q: You are leaving for tour, list 5 things you can’t live without on the road.
A: 1) Jokes 2) Cheap Food 3) Coffee 4) Cigarettes 5) Our manager’s phone number

Q: What challenges have you overcome as an artist, or band, that have made you a better band/artist?
A: This band has overcome every obstacle from the van breaking down in the middle of the nowhere during a snow storm, to band fights while performing live on stage, to having labels very interested in us then never hearing back from them. I am grateful to be in a band with a group of friends that can experience all these challenges together and still look at the world in a positive way and look forward to seeing what next day holds for us.

Q: What motivates you to continue making music?
A: We have been writing music with one another since we could pick up an instrument so watching each of us grow as an artist is continuously motivating us all the time. Feeling the energy that we bounce off of one another when we play together is a pretty amazing thing to be apart of.

The first record that had an influence on me becoming a musician was Nirvana Nevermind and the first instrument that I ever owned was a red memphis electric guitar.

Q: If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing?
A: Probably selling mens suits i feel like i would be really good at that.

LA TIMES: VB is “Right Here Right Now”

06.07.10

We are featured in the latest issue of LA Times Magazine “Right Here Right Now” as one of the top Los Angeles up and coming indie music bands! Nic Harcourt, our gracious pundit, provides us with the backing as “one to watch” in the L.A. indie music scene. Once again we have to thank Nic for the positive review and to LA Magazine for the feature! Here’s the article:

Right Here Right Now

L.A.’s indie-music scene is bursting with contenders–our pundits pick the ones to watch
edited by NIC HARCOURT | photographs by KAYT JONES

Despite all the doom and gloom that has been emanating from the music business for the past decade or so, there are more people making music across the globe than ever. Every day, it seems there’s a new band, a new scene or a new next big thing. It’s usually a boutique city such as Nashville, Seattle or Austin that gets profiled as “authentic,” while Los Angeles is often overlooked. This, of course, is ironic. From the Doors and the Eagles to Fishbone and NWA, our city has given birth to both movements and artists, many of which have gone on to stardom.

In just the last few years, we’ve seen an explosion of new L.A. bands and venues—a renaissance, if you will, of the DIY ethic of just getting out there. And now that tunes can be recorded at home and distributed via computer, it’s a lot easier for musicians to get themselves heard.

So, who will be the next great indie band in L.A.? We asked some people we respect for their own picks: Mitchell Frank, who runs and books Spaceland, the Echo and the Echoplex; L.A. Times pop-music critic Ann Powers; Kat Corbett, host of KROQ’s Locals Only show; Kara Lane, who books the in-store performances at Hollywood’s Amoeba Records; a newcomer, Cary Georges, an LA staffer; and, oh, yours truly. Everyone has an opinion…

VOXHAUL BROADCAST

You’ve (hopefully) been reading my song picks every month in “Turn It Up” over the past 18 months, and so you know that many of my selections have been from L.A. bands. The bottom line is that there is a tremendous amount of talent gracing stages around the city right now. But in keeping with the concept of this piece, narrow it down I did, to a band I first came across in the fall of last year: Voxhaul Broadcast. The guys in this Orange County four-piece have been playing together since they were kids. And the live shows reflect the passion that has etched them a reputation as one of SoCal’s best live bands. Their EP Rotten Apples was well received, and this month their debut disc, Timing Is Everything, hits shelves. Musical influences range from classic soul to Manchester swagger to the grit rock of the Pixies. Marry this with smart but unpretentious lyrics and some catchy beats, and there’s something seriously going on here. —Nic Harcourt

Voxhaul Broadcast, Going Live

[Locals Only] Getting by with a little help from their friends

By NATE JACKSON Thursday, Jun 3 2010

Just because a band leave the OC for greener pastures doesn’t mean we’ll stop thinking of them as Locals Only material. Case in point: Voxhaul Broadcast. After years of honing their skills in San Clemente, the band headed to LA in 2008. These days, their sound transmits from the raucous LA bar scene, the taste-making frequencies of KCRW-FM 89.9, and from a small stack of EPs that burn and wail with every ounce of rock & roll soul they can muster. The stages they perform on are getting bigger. So are the crowds shouting out the lyrics to their songs. Alongside their friends Local Natives and the Union Line, the band have matured and continue to chart new levels of buzzworthiness. Following their well-received Rotten Apples EP, they are set to wrap up their debut full-length, Timing Is Everything, sometime in June. Utilizing the sorcery of producers Chris Thorne (Blind Melon) and Tom Biller (Silversun Pickups, Sea Wolf), these OC emigrants—made up of guitar-wielding front man David Dennis, guitarist Tony Aguiar, drummer Kurt Allen and bassist Phillip Munsey—are devising new approaches to a classic sound.

OC Weekly: What would you say to people who see you guys as following in the footsteps of your friends Local Natives or the Union Line in terms of exposure to a wider audience?

David Dennis: I wouldn’t say we’re following in footsteps. We’ve definitely been on tour together with all those bands, and they’re all good friends of ours. So as much as they’ve rubbed off on us, it’s really hard to follow in any band’s footsteps because everything about being in a band and trying to play music for a living is unpredictable as hell. There’s no real path.

Tony Aguiar: Even if we tried to do exactly what those bands would do, it would be a different result anyway.

What are some highlights you guys have had recording your upcoming album? Have you learned anything new about yourselves?

Dennis: In the past, we’ve done a lot of live recording because that’s just the kind of band we are. But we’re starting to realize that every song can benefit from taking time and finding what sounds complement the song better. So we’re trying to branch out in the recording process, too, and not just do everything live—even though that works for us really well and that’s the way we’ve always done it. That’s the way they did it in the ’60s, and we love a lot of that music, how honest it is.

Timing Is Everything—that title sounds like you have a message to convey. Why did you choose that for the album?

Aguiar: We [recorded] the Rotten Apples EP, and that was just some demo we did. We never intended it to be an album or an EP or even have half the success it did. So for us, [Timing] is our first album. We’ve just been doing EPs and demos, and now we’re finally putting together an album, a solid work of material that we’re really happy with.

Do you feel it’s important to be known as an OC-based band despite relocating to LA a few years ago?

Dennis: I’ve never really thought where we’re from was too much of a big deal. I’ve lived in so many different places over my life that where I’m from doesn’t really matter to me. Honestly, when I hear a record or a band I like, the first thing I wanna do isn’t look up where they’re from.

Voxhaul Broadcast perform with Big Bad Wolf, Honey Pie and Jameson at the Gypsy Lounge, 23600 Rockfield Blvd., Ste 3A, Lake Forest, (949) 206-9990. Fri., 8:45 p.m. Call for cover. 21+. For more info on the band, visit www.voxhaulbroadcast.com.

Voxhaul Broadcast Interview on UK “Ballad Of”

06.01.10

We were interviewed on the wonderful music site for “BALLAD OF” magazine recently. Check it:

Sharing Is Good No.6: Voxhaul Broadcast

By CamilleMusic on May 31, 2010
This isn’t any old Sharing Is Good though, because we caught up with Phil the bass man and a few of his band mates in an interview as short and sweet as 911 (and if you don’t remember them, that means: very)

B: How are you today?

P: I am well, I ended up falling asleep at 6 last night so woke up super early at 4:30am. Been drinking coffee ever since.

B: Where are you at the moment, what you up to?

P: Currently we are at home working on putting our first full length out, trying to decide on what songs to choose, who we want to work with, and playing a lot of shows, seeing what works.  We’ve got a steady amount of shows and radio play, so we’re having fun!

B: We’ve featured you in our Top 5 (new) Bands.  How did you start making music?

P: We all basically started playing music together. Toe Knee and Kurt have known each other since they were 4, and have been making music together since before they really could play, and David and I since we were like 10 or something, and the first time I ever heard David play was on a cassette tape recording that him and Kurt made of a song her wrote – and the day I knew I wanted to make music with him.  At the time we all our bands.  Kurt and Toe Knee had a band with Ma from Delta Spirit and Tony from The Union Line. David and I played in separate bands but I ended up driving their bands around since I was the only who drove at the time (a Ford Cargo van). I remember having 16 or so kids in my van coming back from shows. I was only a few years older so I was actually just a kid as well. Slowly but surely we all merged into one band year after year, literally, some name changes until, eventually, we became who we are now as musicians, writers and best friends.

B: What influences you in your work – any particular artists or things?

P: I’d think it would be a fair assumption that life plays a very important aspect of any artists work, but more specifically they way people are and how they respond to situations, but lyrics just come out when the song is doing what it’s supposed to do.  When David captures this feelings he’s portraying in a song and we all play it – the song starts to bloom inside of David and he sings off the top of his head and that’s where the magic happens.  So honest and true, he just sings what’s in his head and it comes out so brilliant. As far as influences go, obviously The Beatles, Beach Boys, Motown, Dylan and Nirvana.

B: You’re all the way out in L.A, where as I am all the way out in a northern post industrial British city.  What’s the music scene like out there?

P: It’s pretty healthy! We live in Echo Park and it seems like everyone is in a band/s. It is pretty amazing to go down the street to any of the main coffee shops in town and know you’ll find your other band comrades chillin’, smokin’ spliffs and drinking coffee.  There’s always one of your friends bands playing, all the time.

B: And finally, are there any other bands/artists other than yourselves, worth checking out?

P: So many of them; Black Apples, Rumspringa, Lemon Sun, Union Line, Sequins and Skeletons – and those are just the ones I can remember.  Before we all lives in Echo Park we used to just check out the Echo and Spaceland sites for new bands.
